About Me:
I am the author of Drunk with Wonder: Awakening to the God Within . I went from homeless and shooting drugs in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district at 17 to graduating form UC Berkeley on the Dean’s List six years later.
Drunk with Wonder: Awakening to the God Within is the culmination of years of research and decades of personal experience. It's been hailed as where ”Conversations with God meets What the Bleep Do we Know?”I am proud to say that Drunk with Wonder was written, edited and designed with almost no help from fossil fuels, and was printed on 60# Thor Offset acid-free, recycled paper (85% recovered fiber, 30% post consumer) with soy-based ink.
About me: I was raised in a home filled with love but also filled with hurt, anger, secrets and both emotional and physical abuse (not sexual, just the “whacking” kind). Not surprisingly, I took to drugs & alcohol like a Rottweiler takes to delivery people. Though it took decades, I has now been free of alcohol for over five years.
I confess to being a high-school dropout, though I also have three college degrees:
AA in Liberal Arts: Pasadena City College, 1971
BA in English Literature: UC Berkeley, 1973
AS in Business: Solano Community College, 1980
I am a minister of the Universal Life Church, a licensed Massage Therapist and a Reiki Therapist.
I co-founded a number of businesses. One, Ryals & Associates, Inc., is still in business 25 years later (though I am no longer associated with it). Another, Planet Earth Music, rode the dot-com boom of the late 90s, only to crash and burn early in the new century.
I have been writing poetry for over 40 years (over 20 of my poems appear in Drunk with Wonder) and I have also written numerous short stories and a science fiction novel or two, which have so far remained unpublished.
I founded Rock Creek Press in 1990, and have self-published three poetry books as well as a couple of poetry books by other authors. A graphic artist as well as a writer and editor, I continue to produce newsletters and other graphic materials for a small but avid customer base.
In 1992, I created an audio version of my poetry book Winds of Dawn with my friend BODHI, who played improvisational keyboards, piano or flute on each track. Using an original watercolor commissioned for the project, I created a package including the book and cassette that still sells whenever I perform.
From 1994-2004, I was a free-lance music reviewer for New Age Retailer and then the Sedona Journal of Emergence. I wrote and published over 1,200 reviews, hundreds of which are still available online.
I have also had articles published in PC World and Electronic Design magazines (a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away).
For the past 11 years, I have lived in the wild mountains of Mendocino County in Northern California with my Beloved wife JoAnn. We thrive in an off-the-grid environment, producing most of our electricity from solar panels, with hydro in the winter.
Currently I publish a monthly newsletter, also called Drunk with Wonder. If you're interested in checking it out, just surf over to drunkwithwonder.com and look in the archives.
A video, several radio intervies, and links to my blog and a number of articles are also available from my home page.
